Clive Rowland steps down from running the Raeburn Hut
After twelve years as custodian of the Raeburn Hut, Clive Rowland is stepping down and passing the baton on to the next generation. A long-time member of the Club. Clive was very active in the '60s climbing extensively in the Peak, Wales and the Alps, before moving to Inverness in the 70’s, where he established the town’s first climbing shop and did lots of new-routing in the NW with the likes of Tom Patey and Paul Nunn.
Clive also had a stint in the ‘80s as custodian of the Ling hut, somehow managing that and continuing his expeditions to the Greater Ranges (Pic Lenin, Gasherbrum III etc), having previously saved the lives of Doug Scott and Chris Bonington on the famous “crawl down the Ogre” in 1977 along with Mo Antoine.
On behalf of all members of the Club and the wider mountaineering community who have enjoyed the hospitality of the Raeburn over the last twelve years, the Club would like to extend our best wishes and thanks to Clive for all his hard work as custodian of the Raeburn hut.
The photo shows Clive in 1964, taken the year he climbed the Walker Spur and the Bonatti Pillar. At a mere 20 years old, Clive was the youngest Briton at the time to have climbed these routes.
