The Collection

The Scottish Mountaineering Club's Library consists of books, club journals, guidebooks, magazines, maps and expedition reports.

It includes historical and current publications by the Scottish Mountaineering Club and Scottish Mountaineering Trust along with a vast library of books on: technical and philosophical aspects of mountaineering, climbing, skiing, hill walking and other outdoor pursuits; fiction and literature; biographies and autobiographies; travel and exploration from across the world which includes an extensive collection of Scottish texts; history of mountaineering; antiquarian collection of 18th century Scottish travel and tour books.

The journal collection is particularly useful, since it includes over 90 titles documenting over a century of climbing culture.

The books, guides and journals are all catalogued and can be searched via the University’s online search system available at http://suprimo.lib.strath.ac.uk

Location

The Scottish Mountaineering Club library is located in the Archives and Special Collections department of the Andersonian Library at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Entrance to the library is off Cathedral Street.

Access

Anyone is welcome to visit the Archives and Special Collections reading room to consult the collection, by appointment. The reading room is open Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:50 pm (excluding local and public holidays).

Membership

An additional benefit of the library being housed at Strathclyde is that members of the SMC are eligible to join the University of Strathclyde library. This requires a valid SMC membership card, photographic identification and proof of current address, and entitles members to borrow up to five books from the University’s general collections.
